The Man

Luis, I wanted to get you something special,

something treasured, precious, that sort of thing,

because you’ve been the sparkling gold in my life,

yes, you are the golden gold in this wedding ring.

I also want you to know that you’re appreciated,

in fact, I’d like to thank you for all that you’ve done,

because your love has been my inspiration, my light,

yes, in every way, you’ve been like my morning sun.

You’re wonderful! You are just so loving and caring,

and I think of our family and my chest swells with pride,

because I know Luis couldn’t have chosen finer,

I know he couldn’t – even if he’d tried.

So, a wonderful husband, father and provider,

there’s a lot of wonder in just that one line,

but I know you work hard so we have everything,

yes, I’m very proud of that husband of mine.

I am also very proud of the person you’ve become,

truth, I’ve never said just how wonderful you are,

just know that if my love for you were a distance,

well, it would reach way beyond the furthest star.

And that star shines on one of New York’s finest, just

know that I’m proud of what you do, every single day,

I think of you when you are working those crazy hours,

and that one line leaves so very much to say:

Because I look forward to many, many years with you,

yes, with you, I am looking forward to the rest of my life,

because I know I wouldn’t want to spend it with anyone else,

yes, I am very proud to be called and known as “your wife”.

You see, we’ve come long way from Migente,

and I remember meeting you under a light in a busy place,

actually, I met my prince at a White Castle, in a parking lot,

but “You’re the man” bought a dollar and smile to your face.

A little while later we shared our first kiss, in my car,

in front of your forbade apartment, right across the street,

I was still a little nervous, so we’d just sit and talk and talk,

but just mention shopping and you could hear our marching feet.

So we’d go almost every weekend to Woodbury Common and shop,

and when we dated, Umberto’s Clam House was our place to eat,

but when I look back and think of all our special moments,

well, I know of one that is simply impossible to beat…

That was of course when baby Luis landed on this Earth,

I remember you crying a river and then some sea,

you were just so proud to have your first born, you

said you’d waited your entire life, for this to be.

But you’re always thinking about me, doing little things,

special little things, like bringing home my favorite cup,

and Luis, I just wanted to thank you for being you, but

working in Narcotics, I feel embarrassed to bring this up.

Because I know you’ve had many talks with crack heads, and

to keep them on the straight and narrow, you do what you can,

but do you know something? I think you should have given him,

at least another dollar, because he was right! You are THE MAN!

And I am just so glad that The Man is My Man, because

I love you with all my heart, with all my soul,

“Hi Allen,

Thank you, I loved it… I had some of my co-workers read it and give me their feedback and they loved it as well.  Actually, they did the awws and they laughed when they got to the part about the crackhead.  Thanks, romantic and funny.
My co-workers had me forward your link to them.

I wanted to let you know that you did hit it on the head with the title “The Man”.  I wrote Luis many letters with that and included that in the cards that I have given him and it was all because of that one day.  Funny how you chose to use that.  I thank you and think it is great and I am 100% sure he will love it and get a kick out of it.  This will put a smile on his face.

As for publishing the poem, it’s okay with me.  No need to change any names.  I like it the way it is . 

There is only one thing I would like to change/add, and that is my sons name Luis in this verse “That was of course when Luis landed on this Earth,”. 
If you can change it to baby Luis.
