Life seemed wonderful, then I met Brian. I never knew the true meaning
of wonderful until he came into my life. Our first date was a blind date. I
was so nervous I watched him walk to my front door through the peep hole. He
seemed nervous too which made everything alright. The vision is just as clear
today as the night of our date. He wore beige pants and a yellow golf shirt. I
wore a royal blue sild dress. Our first date was at the Woolgrowers
Restaurant. That was when he touched me for the first time. I'll never forget
it. That feeling felt so right. We sat across from each other and began to
learn about each other. He noticed that I had green eyes and said, "anyone that
has ever meant anything special to me has had green eyes." His mother had green
eyes and little did he know his daughter would one day too. We dated and fell
in love. The feeling came more easily for me, later for him. I remember the
first time he actually said, "I love you." It wasn't in person and it didn't
really sound definitive. He left me a message on my answering machine and ended
it with, "um...um...I think I love you. Those were the most wonderful words to
hear, I think my heart stopped for a moment. I still have and treasure the
tape! Many months passed and he finally got the courage to ask me to marry him,
with a little persuasion. Well, in a way. He said, "I think we should get
married." I agreed. The next day I wasn't really sure if it was a
proposal...it was. We had a small wedding in a small chapel with family and the
next evening we had a celebration of our union with hundreds of friends. From
that evening on life has been in the fast lane, each day passing more and more
wonderful. Remember I said life "seemed wonderful", then I met Brian!
We left for our honeymoon in Hawaii with parting words from his mother, Lela to
come home with a grandchild. Little did she know we wanted to start our family
right away. I remember how excited we were to start and how much fun it was
trying. In a matter of days somehow he knew that he was a Dad. Soon, as nine
months passed our beautiful daughter, Melissa was born. My heart melted when I
saw him holding her. His smile said everything and his kiss sealed the very
memorable moment.
Time flew with so much life to live. We grew happier and loved each other more
and more as days passed. We had each other and we had our little girl. It
seemed we had everything but most of all we were happy in love.
We began to wonder if Melissa needed a brother of sister and after much
contemplation we decided that it was the right thing for everyone. With God on
our side we had a perfect beautiful boy. Kenneth William looked like his Dad
and when I looked at the two of them I felt the greatest love. We named him
after his two Grandfathers.
Today, twenty years later, I look back on our life together and know that life
is wonderful. I am so proud of who we are and what we've done together. We have
always believed in ourselves and knew, "when life seemed hard our character of
virtue grew." He once said, "It seemed that just about everything in life
becomes ordinary and taken for granted but not our love and devotion for each
other." He is a very special husband, father, partner and best friend. He
compliments my life. I can't imagine our life being better. Today, my heart is
overflowing with life and love that is constantly replenished by him. He is my
heart, my soul my inspiration.
Little did I know that when I thought life "seemed" wonderful, I was just
beginning to live!

Then I Met Brian
Life seemed simply
wonderful,
and then I met
you, my soul-mate,
and ever since
that day I’ve been grateful,
I’ve been thanking
those winds of fate.
Because I didn’t
know the meaning of wonderful,
I only found the
true meaning when you came into my life
and I just wanted
to say that I’m proud of you,
I’m very proud to
be called your wife.
Our first date was
a blind date,
but I’ve been
seeing stars ever since that time,
just one of many
reasons that I love you,
just one of the
many reasons for this rhyme.
I was so nervous I
watched you through the peep hole,
but you seemed
nervous too, so that made it alright,
and I still have
such a clear recollection,
I can remember
everything about that night.
You wore beige
pants and a yellow golf shirt,
I wore a royal
blue silk dress,
our first date was
at the Woolgrowers restaurant,
my first course
was lifelong happiness.
That was when you
touched me for the first time,
I’ll never forget
how good and right that felt,
we sat and started
to learn about each other,
I think I learned
how L-O-V-E was actually spelt.
You noticed that I
had green eyes
and you told me
that your mother had them too,
so that was the
first night of many, many more,
and of course, it
wasn’t long before I was in love with you.
The feeling came
very easily for me,
but it took a
while for your feelings to take shape,
but you left a
“um…….um” message for me,
I still have and
how I treasure that tape!
I think my heart
stopped for a moment,
to me, they
were the most important words you'd ever said,
that was until,
some months later,
you uttered those
words: “I think we should wed”.
The next day I
wasn’t sure it was a proposal,
but thankfully,
that’s not where this story ends,
because we had a
small wedding in a chapel with family,
and the next
evening we celebrated with our special friends.
From that evening
on life has been in the fast lane,
and every day is
even better than the days before,
just know that I
love you today, I’ll love you tomorrow,
and of course,
I’ll simply love you for evermore.
Your Mom gave us
our parting instructions,
and boy, it was a
lot of fun we had,
but I guess some
things are simply destined,
because in a
matter of days, somehow we knew you were a Dad.
And Melissa has
been our everything and more,
my heart melted
when I saw you holding her in your arms,
your smile said it
all, your kiss sealed the moment,
you were a Dad
helpless under his daughters charms.
We held each other
and we held our little girl,
we had everything
but most of all we had our love,
and then Kenneth
William made us complete,
and we knew we’d
been truly blessed by the heavens above.
Today, twenty
years on, life is wonderful,
I think James
Stewart had it right in ’43,
because then he
said “It’s a wonderful life”,
and they seem very
true words to me.
I’m so proud of
who we are,
and what we’ve
achieved together,
we have always
believed in ourselves
and we have a love
that will last forever and ever.
When life seemed
hard, our characters grew,
with
determination, it's amazing what you can discover,
and just about
everything in life becomes ordinary,
but not our love
and devotion to one another.
“Then I met
Brian”,
I think was a
story that had to be told,
just know that I’m
looking forward to our future,
and our future
stories, as they unfold.
Because you are a
special husband,
father, partner
and my very best friend,
you compliment my
life completely,
and you will
always do so, until our journeys end.
We are just like
the Boehm swans,
mating for life
and in our unity we stand,
and we'll "swan"
through the rest of our lives,
united, together,
in love, wing in wing, hand in hand.
And I’d just like
to say thank you,
thank you for
playing such an important role,
because you’ve
made life “truly” wonderful,
you are my light,
my heart, my very soul.

After the first draft:Hello Allen,
How did you do that so quickly? You did a beautiful job!!!!!! I have just a
few lines that need a little adjustment to make them sound more like "me."
On the stanza starting with, "I think my heart stopped ... please take out the
word 'nearly" in the last line.
In the next stanza beginning with, "The next day... Please remove "hundreds
of" even though it is true. It sounds like we are bragging.
The stanza that begins with, "When life seemed hard, our characters grew..."
The second line isn't "me" but I'm not sure how to reword it. If you need to
leave out the "virtue" part it's OK, even though we believe in it.
That's about it!!! Not much. Feel free to make adjustments as you see fit
after you reread it.
I would like to choose the white and silver paper upon completion.
Also the main stanza that says it all is the second to the last.
Because you are a special husband,
father, partner and my very best friend,
you compliment my life completely,
and you will always do so, Until our journeys end.
You're GREAT,
Barbara
PS How long have you been doing this? I'm not sure how I even stumbled on
your site. I think I was looking for poems that included something to do with
swans. You know, how they mate for life and stand for unity etc. I don't
know if you have heard of Boehm, but I have swans being made by Boehm for our
anniversary as a momento. They are beautiful and made of porcelain and very
intricate. I never found anything but ran across your site. This is
much more personal. I'm very excited about the whole idea. However, I still
need something that explains the swan theme. Any suggestions? You are so
creative.
There were a
couple of minor (one line changes after that). After the fourth draft:
Allen,
It's perfect. Absolutely perfect! Do you need any other info from me?
Please let me know.
Best Regards,
Barbara
