What are the key messages you would like to send: My Undying Love and Never ending Friendship

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: About us: Jen and I are both in the US Army stationed at Ft Bragg NC. She is a Captain and a Lawyer (as well she is an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper meaning she jumps out of airplanes). I am a Warrant Officer and a Helicopter Pilot. We met in Kuwait in September 2003. Funny thing is that when we met I was sent to see her about some legal work. I ran into her outside the tent where she was working and told her that I needed to see her about some legal issues I had. She promptly said well I am going to chow (lunch) and to go see another legal assistance lawyer. She basically blew me off and I really coudn't quite believe it. Anyway that turned out to work to our benefit. So as we moved up into Iraq she wound up at the same camp. We became really good friends often saw each other in the chow hall and began a long series of the game Cribbage in our off time. I think the running score is something like 996 to 4 in my favor.
A moving moment in my life happened on the night of November 21, 2003 at about 1am. While flying a combat mission this extremely dark night the aircraft that myself and my copilot were flying slammed into the desert floor at over 100 mph totally destroying the aircraft. Somehow for whatever reason we both managed to get out and walk away from the crash with little more than a few scratches and some bruises. It was then that I realized angels must have been riding along with us and that there was something else in my life that I had not accomplished yet. It just was not our time. I will include a photo so that you can see what I mean.

I saw Jen following the crash and it was then that I started to realize the depth of our friendship. That friendship continued to get stronger throughout the deployment. As I watched her board an aircraft in March 2004 and leave for the states I couldn't help feeling that our friendship had turned into something more. It was then that I felt love. We continued to communicate through email daily and the love grew. Upon my return to the states in April 2004 we began to actually date and pretty much became inseparable. We went to Vegas as sort of a celebration for making it back from Iraq alive. We joked profusely about winding up in a wedding chapel there but we held our ground. I did however ask her to marry me on the plane back to Ft Bragg NC. She was very surprised and cried a bit but happily she said yes.
Her brother came to visit on 1 July 2004 and while he was there that night we decided to go get married. We actually were married in a wedding chapel in Dillon SC. on July 3, 2004 with her brother as our witness. No fuss no hassel. We enjoyed that very much. Now a month later I received word that my unit was going back to Iraq for possibly 18 months. This time would be with out her as we were to go support a New York National Guard unit. Well as luck would have it and due to her true military values she volunteered to go and help the NY unit who was short on personnel in the legal field. I deployed here for the second time in September 2004 after being home only 5 months. Jen deployed with the NY unit a few months later in January 2005. We are now at different bases here in Iraq but close enough that we get to at least visit for a day or so every now and again. I often surprise her by flying in to her base and having lunch or dinner with her. We actually managed to get R&R Leave together and spent three weeks traveling around Spain, France and Germany.
I know she loves me deeply by the simple fact that she volunteered her services which have put her in this very dangerous place again just so that she could at least be in the same country with me. I don't know of a wife anywhere that would risk her life and put herself in this type of volatile environment. True Love? I would have to say yes indeed.
We will celebrate our First Anniversary right here in the very desert where we first became such great friends and still remain the best of friends and always will. My love for her is undying and forever.
By the time we return to the states we will have spent all but 4 months of our marriage thus far (together but apart) in a hostile combat zone in the middle of Iraq helping to fight the global war on terrorism.

I Realize

We first met in Kuwait in September 2003,

I ran into you outside of your tent,

and although you basically blew me off,

I reckon that meeting was heaven sent.

And so in Iraq, we wound up at the same place,
and though I lived in a tent with a dirt floor,
it was there we began our long series of Cribbage,
and I think that I am winning, like 500 games to 4.

But I’ll never forget the night of November 21, 2003,

somehow, for whatever reason, we both managed to walk away,

and then I realized angels were riding with us,

and I realized it wasn’t our time (it was our day).

I started to think about all that’s to come,

and all the things I hadn’t accomplished yet,

it was then our friendship became even more,

and in Vegas, I discovered a real safe bet.

Actually, I fell in love with you before that,

it was March and it was when I watched you board the plane,

and I realized just what you meant to me,

what if I never got to see you again?

But thankfully, we went to Vegas to celebrate,

I guess we were celebrating getting back alive,

and although we joked profusely about a wedding chapel,

that’s where our love really started to thrive.

And on that plane back to Fort Bragg,

well, I knew we were destined for a lifetime of happiness,

and I know you were surprised and you cried a bit,

but I’m so glad you had the good grace to say “yes”.

So when your brother came visiting that July,

with no fuss, no hassle, the two of us were wed,

and that was my greatest day ever,

and “I do” were the finest words I’ve ever said.

But a month later, I got the call again,

and this time I’d be going back, without you to hold,

but I’m so glad you volunteered for The New Yorkers,

because yours is a story that deserves to be told.

So, now we’re in different bases in Iraq,

but close enough so we get to visit, just once in a while,

and I surprise you by flying in for lunch or dinner,

(just so I can see your beautiful smile).

I’ll never forget our time in Spain, France and Germany,

those three weeks, I wanted them to last forever,

because that time was time spent with you,

and we have so much fun when we’re together.

And I know that you love me deeply,

as you wouldn’t be in the most dangerous place on Earth.

True Love? I would have to say yes indeed,

yes indeed, Jen, I know your true and honest worth.

Because our first anniversary will be spent in the desert,

and that’s where we first became such great friends,

just know that my love for you is undying, it’s forever,

it’ll burn long after this earthbound journey ends.

And I know our first year hasn’t been easy,

after all, we’ve spent all but four months in a combat zone,

just know that I now realize how much I love you,

and I realize, in the desert, I’m not all alone.

"Allen,

Sorry I have been out of pocket. We lost two guys in a helicopter crash Saturday morning.

The poem sounds great. I would like to see if we can work the second verse just a bit. Here is an idea let me know what you think.

And so in Iraq, we wound up at the same place,
and though I lived in a tent with a dirt floor,
it was there we began our long series of Cribbage,
and I think that I am winning, like 500 games to 4.

Thanks James"

(and that's the one we went with, Ed)

"Let's go with the Sunset Paper and the hearts.

I think the 13th verse is the one I like the best.

First line is "Because our first anniversary will be spent in the desert"

The message should read:  Jen, You are my best friend, confidant and wife. Happy Anniversary, All my love,  Will"
