The Green
and Gold
When I reach my twilight years,
and when I'm just a little too old,
I'll always look back and remember,
the magnificent Green and Gold.
The men's relay teams,
every swimmer is a genuine star,
because they taught the States how to swim,
and how to play the blues on guitar.
Then there was the Thorpedo,
with his feet, size seventeen,
pulling off the greatest victory,
that the pool had ever seen.
And Susie nearly grabbed two,
she gave it one good try,
a gold in the 200m freestyle,
and a silver for The Butterfly.
Granted he'd spent a long time swimming,
and living in the second lane,
but World Champion Grant Hackett,
ended Kieren's eight year reign.
And what about the water polo ?
The girls sure made Ryde rock,
when they scored the winning goal,
with only one second on the clock.
The jumpers made it three in a row,
which was their finest result yet,
let's not forget the wonderful horses,
and the loving care of the triple gold vet !
The sun shone for Simon Fairweather,
who kept on the straight and narrow,
shot gold for nearly the whole match,
apart from one lonesome arrow.
And if you mix Brett and Scott
with Ozzie pride and a little bit more,
you get to bring home the first gold,
since the chasers in eighty four.
And remember Michael Diamond ?
A special jewel in the crown,
he shot one hundred and forty seven,
I bet his proud father was looking down.
Bondi cheered the beach volleyball,
the girls were just a trifle bold,
because they toppled the Brazilians,
and now they're bronzed with specks of gold.
And what can you say about Cathy Freedom?
she'd already set the cauldron alight,
but she set the world on fire,
when she won her race that night.
===
And they've all done their country proud,
they can hold their heads up high,
they've taught us all how to win,
they've even made grown blokes cry.
They've made the country united,
reunited under one flag unfurled,
they've made Australians sing again,
and they've sung it to the world.
