"Happy Birthday, I Love You"

Here's good example of what can be achieved. Francesca has kindly given her permission for her poem and story to be published (requested privacy is always respected). Francesca's mother celebrated her 73rd birthday in July 2006 and this is her moving story:

What are the key messages you would like to send: How mum has always been my best friend, my mentor, what an amazing mum she has been and continues to be, especially since the death of our Dad her devoted husband, which all happened so suddenly due to a Brain Tumour.

Always strong, always there as a rock to lean on, always there for guidance, advice etc. Mum puts everyone else first, even though us as children are 38 (myself Francesca), 46 (Kevin) and 49 (Stephen) she looks out for us constantly, for our safety and for our health. And always looking out for her Grandchildren.

Just wanted to say what a wonderful mother and grandmother she has been to us all. And that i hope my child will think the same of me, although my mum will be a hard act to follow.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: Countless!

The lovely holidays with Mum, Dad, Steve, Kevin when we were kids, in Devondale, and Bournemouth UK, Learning to swim with my dad, swimming and making sand castles, stephen my brother losing his swimming trunks when he dived in the pool, and Kevin running around the pool like a lunatic with a towel in his hand for his brother.

More recently as we grew older the summer BBQ's at my house and my brothers houses, where the whole family would get together eat lots of food, drink lots and play games in the garden with the grandchildren.

I remember on my Nieces birthday, my mum had a go on my nephews skateboard, i think she was in her late 60's then we all called her Supernan as she rode by on the skateboard.

So many happy, sad, embarrassing memories to list.

Since my dad passed away i stay with mum twice a week and we have been getting tipsy together on Baileys more often than we should. We talk about everything together, Dad, Work, Family and normally end up giggling at each other when were are tipsy.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts : Just that we will always love her, respect her, and be there for her.

And that dad is still with her everyday. Dont want to make the poem to be sad, dont want to mention Dads Brain Tumour but want to mention Dad (he was an amazing man too) in the poem as he is still a huge part of our lives. Just that she is an amazing woman, strong, funny, caring, loving, sensible, responsible, a best friend all the things a mother should be.

You've Always

Mum, you've always been my best friend,
my mentor, my reason to achieve,
you've given me so very much in life, yes,
you've given me the reason to believe.

You've always been such an amazing mum,
and thankfully, I can also say that in the present tense,
you've shown me so many important lessons,
live and love your life to the full, just common sense.

But since Dad has gone, you have shone,
you've had to take the helm in troubled seas,
you've always been strong, a rock to lean on,
always there to help (and every opportunity you seize).

You've always given great advice and guidance,
and on those seas, you've been our guiding light,
you've made rainbows out of stormy weather,
you've made daybreak out of the darkest night.

You have always put your children first,
even though Ill admit, we've near fully grown,
but Kevin, Stephen and I just wanted to thank you,
were very grateful for all the love that you've shown.

You've always looked out for us, constantly,
concerned about our safety and our health,
and now, you're always looking out for your grandchildren,
with you in our lives, we have such treasure, such wealth.

You are a wonderful mother and grandmother,
and yes you've been that, to one and all,
its because of you, we all walk taller,
in fact, I feel like I'm about 10 feet tall.

I just hope my child will think the same of me,
although I admit, you're a hard act to follow,
but if its okay, Ill try and take your lead,
and a few of your steps I'll have to borrow.

Because Ill never forget our wonderful times together,
Devondale, Bournemouth, Stephen losing his trunks,
right through to today, my, we love our Baileys,
careful, were turning into a couple of drunks!

But I really enjoy our time together,
we normally end up giggling twice a week,
and I think that's more than okay, Dad would approve, and,
just for one moment, there are some words I need to speak.

You see, he too was such an amazing individual,
you were his quality girl, he was your quality man,
and I know that he's still here with us,
I know, that like us, he's very proud of our Super Nan!

So just know that Ill always be there for you,
I'll love and respect you to the end of my days,
and I know that feeling will be returned many times over,
because that's what you've done for us, always.
