Who do you want the poem written for?: Jake ~ My
mom and dad's (Phyllis and Ray) Black Lab
Why do you want the poem written ?: Jake passed
away today (Born 10-27-90 Died 8 Mar 02.)
Key Messages: Jake was so full of life.
He will be sorely missed by my parents. Please talk about his life, & how he
will be missed, but more importantly, the wonderful memories that they will
always have.
Memorable Moments: It all started 11 years
ago, when my husband and I gave our children a Black Lab Puppy, Camille, for
Christmas.
We lived on the 1st floor of a duplex. Camille's seven lab siblings & her
parents lived upstairs. There was only one sibling left to be given away.
My parents came to visit us and to meet Camille. I was worried because my
mother loved animals, but my dad was always so-so. So, knowing she would flip
over the last pup, I, also, knew my dad wouldn't be so happy. (While growing
up our family had so many dogs & cats it was hard to keep up with them all.)
Well, my parents met Camille and her siblings including the "last" pup. My
FATHER took one look at that dog, and, just like that, "Jake" found a new
home!! I could not believe it, in fact, we all looked at each other in
disbelief.
My father (and mother, of course) was absolutely in love with him. My
siblings and I (all out of the house) never saw them so head-over-heals in
love with a dog like they were with Jake. Jake and my dad were joined at the
hip.
Jake was such a healthy, active lab and absolutely full of life until two
weeks ago. On 2/27/02 he was diagnosed with liver cancer and it was quickly
spreading. My parents were devastated. My mother said she felt like she was
hit by a truck and, my dad, all he did was cry (I never heard or saw my dad
cry). They were in total shock. While in the vet's office, they agonized
over whether or not they should put Jake to sleep. The vet offered help by
saying Jake is at peace when he is home, that is where he ought to be. So, my
parents brought him home to nurture him until he would pass. And that is just
what they did.
I live 4 hours away from my parents. Last weekend I brought Camille and our
other (yellow) lab, Bear to visit Jake and to say goodbye. It was nice ~ they
spent the weekend together.
I called my dad today to see how Jake was doing. Jake died today (3/8/02) in
my father's arms. We both cried together and we laughed by sharing funny
memories.
Jake was a beautiful black lab and a very funny dog. During obedience
training, he was trotting around in a circle as he should ~ in the middle of
his trot, he lifted his leg on the chair, and just kept on trotting w/o
skipping a beat! The obedience instructor (as my dad referred to her as the
German Drill Sergeant) wanted to know "Vit animal vents to ds' bathroom on ds'
chair?" Jake and my dad just stood back and the both of them never said a
word.
Every morning Jake pulled the covers off my dad because it was time for him to
get up!
Every afternoon Jake pounded his paws on the front door when my dad came home
from work.
If you were sitting in Jake's spot on the sofa. He would just stand there and
stare at you and bark!
Every nite, you knew it was time for Jake to go to bed. He would let my dad
know this by standing in front of the pantry door. This was his sign to say
"okay, give me my snack and then it is time for bed!"
Every now and then Jake would get loose from the house, run around the
neighborhood like a rabbit being chased by a cat! This would last 15 minutes
or so. My parents and us kids would try and chase him, but it was no use ~ it
was a game. He would stop, look at you as if he were saying "you can't catch
me", and then take off again. He would do this until his "batteries died",
then nonchalantly stroll up the driveway and come into the house. What a
silly dog.
My parents have another dog, a beagle name Jessie and also an African Grey
parrot named Ozzie. Ozzie talks quite a bit ~ he is always yelling
something. I'm sure it will be hard over the next few weeks when Ozzie has
something to say about Jake.
Other Comments:
I know I provided lots of info, but I just wanted to give you some background
on my parents and their dog. You do beautiful work. Could you
please right something in memory of Jake. He will be truly missed by us
all......
Here is another memory my parents were
talking about. Jake had "his house" that he stayed in (in the laundry
room). He loved his little home. My parents were laughing quite a bit,
because he was always stealing things from around their house and hiding
them in "his house". Things such as shoes, socks, toys, whatever he could
find. He never chewed anything up, he would just hide them. There was one
time when he even stole my mother's wallet. The only reason they knew it
was him, because there was a trail of money leading right to his dog house.
So, they learned whenever something was missing, Jake's house was the first
place they checked!
There is one more. My parents have an
apple tree in their back yard. Jake loved these apples, he would eat them
all day long. My parents had to limit the number of apples he ate because
it would upset his stomach. It was funny though, because whenever he went
out into the back yard, he would steal the apples, hide them in his
mouth and go running straight to his house so my mom and dad wouldn't catch
him. He buried them in his house and ate them at his leisure!
What a silly dog.......

Our Gift
A gift is always well received,
although it's sometimes just a loan,
and when the gift is taken back,
well then, you too can end up 'a-lone'.
You were so full of life,
and indeed, you'll be sorely
missed,
too many fine qualities for one
silly dog,
too many to individually list.
Our story started eleven years ago,
with your sister, Camille, a beautiful dog too,
and we fell in love right at
the very moment,
when we first set our eyes upon
you.
You were the last pup to go,
they say that the best is always
saved for last,
and you were certainly a remarkable
individual,
the mold was broken when you were
cast.
You were such a funny
dog,
Dad can still see you smiling standing there,
you both had an innocent look on your
face when asked;
"Vit animal vents to d's bathroom
on d's chair?"
And now Dad
will have no one to pull the covers off,
and coming home from work will
never be the same,
and we'll
miss you sitting on that sofa,
Jake - it's simply a crying shame.
Every night you'd know when it was
time for your bed,
you'd lead
the others to sit there in front of the pantry door,
Mom would call you a comical
dog,
but we
know now what best friends are for.
Every now and then you'd get loose,
and you'd play your game of catch
and chase,
and then nonchalantly
you'd arrive home,
with that satisfied look upon your
face.
Ozzie and Jess will also miss you,
you've left a huge
gap that will be hard to fill,
we have
always loved you,
and of course, we always will.
Dad will always treasure your
times together,
you're more than a dog, you've
been his best friend,
and we'll
miss you more than ever,
we're sorry that our journey had to end.
Your life was simply a gift,
a gift from the heavens above,
and we've been blessed by your
presence,
we've been blessed with your love.
It
was very sad but we're glad you
died in Dad's arms,
at peace and safe in your home,
and now we
can imagine you in your heaven,
with a new neighborhood in which
to roam.
And you'll find a new
"house" in a new laundry room,
and new wallets to borrow (just
for a while),
and there'll be apple trees as far
as the eye can see,
and we'll
think of our times together and smile.
So go in peace, our
beautiful dog,
so funny
but yet so very smart,
go in peace, Jake, our
wonderfully gifted dog.
We're going to miss you with all of
our heart.
