A Unique Gift

I was invited to submit a piece for

The Guardian, one of the UK's leading newspapers. The f ull story can be

found here. Here are the two versions of the poem, my "normal" style and

the one that went to print:

Flame

A tiny seed, conceived in love,
a destiny, borne, in stars above,
and so began, my life's story
oh boy! Man's quest for hope and glory.

And as the pages slowly turned,
a true constant flame, so brightly burned,
that fiery light, your love for three,
made our worlds warmer, our place to be.

The love you show is pure, so raw,
even though my shoes made my chin sore,
the awards; trainers and t-shirt,
and getting beat up, really hurt.

But you taught me 'stand on your own ' ,
I'm grateful for all that you've shown,
I can cook, have values and pride,
couldn't love you more, if I tried.

It was tough when my father left,
what can I say? We were bereft,
but that's not where our story ends,
today, me and you, very close friends.

I love the fact that you're Spanish,
shame, matadors quickly vanish,
as you are so beautiful, so fine,
like the finest poetic line.

So, I've nowt but admiration,
for your single determination,
gave me all that I'll ever need,
you fed my soul, taught me to succeed.

I know it's been an uphill climb,
but you've put the reason in our rhyme,
and soon, hope you feel Cupid's dart,
as Flame, I love you, with all my heart.
