Were And Are - A Father's Day gift, forever

What is your name : Debbie Nelson

Who do you want the poem written for: My Dad

Why do you want the poem written: I lost my dad to cancer August 2003, he was my everything and his strength remained he was only 61.

What are the key messages you would like to send: I would like to try to convey his absolute resolve and strength, the song The Dance, by Garth Brooks says it all, he was my hero and my rock, I was the Daddy's little girls but in a good way. :o) He is a great father and husband and Papa to my son. I feel so lost without him and it is hard even now to put into words just how much I miss him and love him, he is my angel on my shoulder, I whispered that in his ear right before he passed, I am who I am because he loved me and never wavered. He was strict but you "knew" he loved you, no words were needed all the time. He was and IS the best dad a girl could wish for! As I grew into a woman and mother I am told how much I am like him and that is what makes me smile, I have a bit of my dad in me and I couldn't be prouder.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: We use to pick on my mom his wife all the time and make her laugh (she was accident prone). He would always drive me even as an adult to work even if it snowed a little, I always relied on him. I remember going out in the boat and just enjoy the weekends with my mom and dad. He always made sure that we were safe and happy and I know this battle with colon cancer scared him the most because he was leaving my mom and me, he was a fighter through the 6 months, but this was one time when he had to finally let go and go to God. My memorable moments were just spending time with him, confiding in him and his insight. My dad always made sure my son Tyler was smiling, even in the pain he was in he went to the store and surprised him with a bike because I didnt have the money at the time I was paying for summer camp, a month before he passed he made my mom drive him over and he bought Tyler a bike, he was a giving, loving Papa. Last summer I was as was my mom and dad overwhelmed by butterflies, my dad said "he was the white one" now when I see a white butterfly swirl around me I smile and cry at the same time, a butterfly in February is uncommon, trust me, snow melting on the ground, me standing outside crying and behold my white butterfly!!! he did tell me he would be the white one!!

Do you have any other comments or thoughts: I just know that he will be forever in my heart and soul, and my life has drastically changed the day he passed, he is my hero, my angel...my daddy. And I know he is watching over me and my mom and son, his name is Bill Nelson, he was just the best, no words can quite explain the emotions that my mom and I feel without him, just that we love him so much and the one year anniversary of his passing is coming and I know this poem you will create will help us, he is in heaven now, in peace and smiling down, I just know it.

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): just something to express my love and happy that he was my dad and sad at the fact our time was cut short.

Please choose which package you would prefer: Unique

Do you have any last comments or thoughts: Just that he was a wonderful dad, husband and papa. He is greatly missed and his love is forever. I said at his funeral, I stood up and looked at everyone and said I am what I am today because he loved me, and that will always be and never change. He is my daddy, a lot of people have fathers, I have a dad! Thank you for doing this poem for me.

Were And Are

You were my rock, my hero,

and you had such a remarkable strength,

and I could go on about your virtues,

and quite justifiably, at great length.

You see, I was Daddy’s little girl,

and I miss you more with every passing day,

you were a great father, husband and Papa,

and that leaves so very much to say:

I feel so very lost without you,

I’m like a yacht without it’s sail,

it’s just so hard to express my feelings,

so just for once, these words will fail.

Because you are the angel on my shoulder,

if there was a decision to be made, you were my guide,

and whenever I think of you, my heart aches,

tears well (but my chest swells and fills with pride).

I am who I am because of you,

I am who I am because of your love,

these were the words I whispered to you,

I know you can hear them in heavenly meadows above.

Your love was unconditional and never wavered,

you were strict but straight down the line,

I always knew that you loved me,

no words were needed, I knew your love was mine.

We used to pick on mom all the time,

well, I’ll admit, she was a little accident prone,

and I remember how you used  to drive me to work,

I always relied on you, I was never alone.

And sadly, you lost your final battle,

God knew your time was up on this planet Earth,

but that time was spent so very wisely,

for we all know just what your life was worth.

I remember all the times I spent with you,

confiding in you and gaining your remarkable insight,

and no matter the problem, you listened,

and you always gave me your love, your light.

And you made sure Tyler got his bike,

and you made sure you kept a smile on your face,

and now I think of you in my heart and soul,

and I also think of you in another place.

Because you told me you’d be the white one,

and there I was in February, with snow on the ground,

there I was, standing outside and crying,

crying about the white butterfly that I’d found.

And I knew then that you’d come back to me,

just to let me know that you were okay,

because a Dad and a Daddy’s girl will always be together,

and that’s the way it will always stay.

Because you are very much a part of me,

you’re in my blood, my heart, my very soul,

you were and you still are, my Dad,

so forever, you’ll always play your father’s role.

So, if it’s OK with you, I’ll still confide in you,

and I know that you’ll give me a listening ear,

and whenever I see a white butterfly fluttering,

I know that you’re with me, always near.

You were and are the best Dad in this world,

the best Dad any girl could wish for,

and as I grow into a woman and a mother,

I’m becoming like you, more and more.

And that is what makes me smile,

because I know that you’re alive, inside of me,

and together, we’ll fly across those meadows,

and together, we’ll find our flower, for all eternity.

"Allen, How remarkable are you. I am sitting here at my desk trying to hold back the tears as I read exactly how I feel in this poem you created.

The only word and there is just one that I would ask you to change is the " You were" the angel on my shoulder, because when he passed I now wear an angel pin, because he "is" the angel on my shoulder now, so maybe you can say "You are the angel on my shoulder". I told him right before he passed that he will become my angel on my shoulder. He was so worried I would "spin out of control" as he put it to my fiancée, he basically bottomed lined him and told him to watch over my mom and me, I have been with him for 9 years so he took the task on with pleasure, he calls my mom and me "Lucy and Ethel", you see my mom lives with me now and we all love it, we are keeping it together just like we promised dad. Your poem for me is so beautiful, when you lose someone who was everything to you sometimes words can help the healing process and that is what you have helped me to do by reading this.

 Thank you, Debbie Nelson"

Allen,

 Here are the choices:

 1. The Paper - Butterflies

2. - The choice of card - Gold

3. Key verse - 1st verse definitely.

4. Personal message:

 Dad,

For now and always you are my Angel on my shoulder,

my love for you eternal. I miss you.

Love you..........Debbie

And after Debbie had received her card:

"Allen,

 Good Morning.

I received the Package yesterday in the mail. I dont know how to Thank You for writing such a beautiful poem in memory of my father and my love for him. Fathers Day is just around the corner and this will be my "forever" fathers day card for him. He saved all of my cards I found out after he passed, I found them in his safe. I could always find the words that fit exactly how much I loved him and after he passed my world went into a spin and no cards seemed to express my feelings anymore. Your poem did!! I know he is watching from up above and loving the fact that again, just the right words were put on paper once more. I will cherish this poem always, you have a remarkable gift of writing and healing by words. I will take this poem with me on our trip to Thousand Islands for the year date of his passing and read this to him at his favorite place on the Saint Lawrence River.

Thank you again, for bringing tears and also a smile to me and my mom.

 Debbie"
