I was invited to take part in The Blue Bus - With Paul Wappat and Ian Robinson, on BBC Radio Newcastle on February 28th 2006. Thanks Paul and Ian, it was a lot of fun. Unless you're local, you probably wont get some of the jokes, but for the record, here's the poem:
It’s The Journey
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, are you ready for a tale of glory? Please get yourself nice and comfortable, because yes, I want to tell you, a story.
This is not about three sheets in the wind, or just a load of old dingo’s kidney, by the way, I’m sorry for the accent, as you can tell, spent some time in Sydney.
And as the snow starts to fall this morning, it reminds me of my ‘Pity Me’ time, sorry, I digress, this is your story, and that is the real reason for the rhyme.
You see, there once was an Easington lad, who spent some time in the City of Sin, stable boy, then bell hop and pump attendant, he had all the potential, nowhere to begin.
One day, as you do, he found a green toad, he thought he’d give this frog a smacking kiss, sticky tongue, clammy skin, clean finger nails, yes, Paul Wappett has been described like this.
So, this unlikely marriage was conceived, and they honeymooned at the BBC, they were down to their last packet of tabs, knocked on the door and pleaded “Sanctuary”.
Spent months and months washing Julia’s feet, and they gave the odd shine to Mike Parr’s car, but in September, Two Thousand and Two, there appeared in the northern sky, a star.
Actually, you had better make that two, because it’s so obvious you’re a team, bringing music and such entertainment, having so much fun, living out your dream.
And I know it hasn’t all been easy, yes, sometimes the wheels don’t go round and round, but it’s the journey, not the getting there, that’s the important bit, that’s what I’ve found.
I think you’re both enjoying that journey, so thanks, it’s truly great to be on board, and as the snow is starting to settle, can I please have my ice scraper award?
