I wrote this for my father in law, who had the guts to read this to his daughter at her twenty first birthday party.

(Not a dry eye in the house !)

Melissa

You are and have always been,
One of the apples in my eye,
The hopes and dreams I have for you,
Are higher than the highest sky.

So where do you begin,
To tell the story of a life ?
Of a woman no longer a girl,
But who's still to become a wife.

The year was nineteen seventy six,
Born in the Gong in the normal way,
And you were soon back home,
After the hospital stay.

You had long black hair,
With your eyes open wide,
And you just kept looking at me,
You could never have been denied.

But you were only six weeks old,
When you nearly passed away,
And if it wasn't for Mrs. Cohen,
You wouldn't be here today.

Your first spoken words,
One of the nicest moments I've had,
I'm pleased to report to all,
You had the good sense to say "Dad".

And when you were still little,
Just over two years old,
You were saved from a six lane highway,
By a stranger with a heart of gold.

Then we went to the UK,
Dragged from the place that you were from,
And when we finally returned to these shores,
You'd become a little Pom !

You've always been bright,
And never nobody's fool,
And it was my proudest moment,
When you were made Captain of the School.

And you have many other talents,
I'm sure the angels can hear,
When you sing with your voice,
That is sweet and crystal clear.

Look, I'm not saying you're perfect,
And you can be steel with some stone,
You give Max such a bloody hard time,
And you can be a pain at home.

PAUSE

So, what of the future ?
It's looking so very bright,
Just don't worry too much about things,
They always go bump in the night !

And so what of the future ?
I guess only time will tell,
But just know that I love you,
And you make me as proud as hell !
