A Unique Graduation Gift

(Here's a good example of what can be achieved. Judy wanted something special for her granddaughter, Samantha.  When Judy asked 11 year old Samantha what she wanted as a gift, she replied: "Your words of wisdom". This was the result. Judy has kindly given her permission for her poem and

story to be published)

Pearls Of Wisdom - Our Gift To You

What is your name : Judith Morin

Who do you want the poem written for: Samantha Farley- My Granddaughter

Why do you want the poem written: Graduation

What are the key messages you would like to send: Samantha is the oldest of 5 children, she has two brothers and two sisters.  Samantha is 16, she will be 17 in August, her brother Nicholas is 15, Rachel is 7, Duncan is 6 and Emma is 4.  Sam is very important to them, Although there are times when they don't get along they love her very much.   Samantha attended public school and graduated from the 8th grade but after 8th grade she and her siblings are home schooled.  Samantha is a very beautiful young lady, big dark almost black eyes, olive skin, just beautiful but not only pretty on the outside but truly beautiful on the inside.  She is 16 and very much in love with Jesus, her parents have given her such a strong religious foundation. Samantha belongs to the Youth Group at church, on the board of Mission  at her church, on the board for Wells Community Center for Kids after school, She has taken Dance, Piano and is a Green Belt Karate 9 her Dad teaches Karate)... I asked her what she wanted for graduation, her reply was words of wisdom, she would like people to write their wise thoughts down for her.  I'm thinking how wise she already is, why beyond me in so many areas and we won't say how old I am!!
Some of the words of wisdom her grandfather and I would give her is, stay true to yourself, always be who you are, many times we battle wanting to be true to ourselves and yet when in a group ending up being who we think those that we're with wants us to be, as an adult I still struggle very hard on this one...  When things happen in our lives, good or bad there are lessons to be learned.  Always be positive and look at that glass as half full or overflowing.  Always treat others as you would want to be treated.  Never make fun or judge others, remember everyone is a child of God and he loves us all unconditionally!!!

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: When Samantha was 11 she attended a christian camp up Maine for a week, her parents and Bob and I (Grandparents) were camping together the weekend she was to come home, Bob and Jeff (her Dad) went to pick her up and brought her back to camp.  I went over, gave her a big hug and asked her how camp was, she replied it was so  great and said Oh Gram last night there was such a beautiful sunset,  you could tell it was so beautiful that she couldn't find the words to describe it.   I was so taken aback, here is an 11 year old girl who is wise enough to appreciate God's blessings in life.  I didn't appreciate a sunset until I was in my 40's.  Right then I knew God was working through her.  She is so special to us, we love her so much.  We have kept her and her brother Nick from the time they were little.  They have traveled with us many places.  We took them to Williamsburg, just took Samantha to California last May, of course Disney.....  She is such a pleasure to take, she is respectful, sweet, kind and I could go on for ever.  I have so much pride when I introduce her, she is such a lady   Not to think that she is not a typical, sometime high strung, excited teenager because she is.  Like the sunset, I can't describe how much her Grandfather and I love her...

I worked with Samantha (her parents own a Florists) and over Mother's Day they needed extra help so I worked and had the privilege to work with Samantha, she was amazing.  On Saturday, mid morning a customer comes in and wants flowers (FTD) to go her mother, of course the day before Mother's day not many Florist are accepting orders.  Samantha had to make many out of state phone calls and all the while this woman is really giving her a hard time, can you imagine, the woman is the one who waited until the last minute and yet she is blaming Samantha because she can't find someone to accept the order!!!  Samantha never faulted, she was so nice and respectful to that lady.  I who am a customer service person and trained that the customer is always right had to bite my tongue... People can be so mean, but Samantha, again with God in her heart was so nice to that horrible lady.  Again, her parents have done a wonderful job bringing her up, she is beautiful through and through!!

Do you have any other comments or thoughts: (This was Judy's second poem) The poem for the wedding was great, I read it at the dinner, my daughter had not cried until I read the poem, only tears she shed.  Everyone thought it was great....  This is my year for events, just had the wedding, now Samantha's Graduation, My husband is turning 60 in July and we will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary in July.  You will be hearing from me a few more times...

Samantha is graduating through her church, her Pastor is Pastor Steve and Samantha thinks he is great, from what I understand he is very good with all his members but very good with the Youth Group, even Nicholas attends sometime...

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): Some humor but also touching!!

Pearls Of Wisdom

Stay true to yourself,
follow your passion, follow your art,
but above all, be true to your soul,
follow the feelings in your heart.

Always be who you are,
let others shape but never mold,
bend and blow in the wind,
it's okay to crease but never fold.

If your self worth is based upon the opinions of others,
then it is not really self worth at all,
be yourself, don't conform to the group,
be proud, be who you are, hold your head high, walk tall.

Good and bad things happen in life,
but always there's a lesson to be learned,
and do good however you can,
every day there's a merit that can be earned.

Always look on the positive side,
what's in the glass is your choice,
always speak and be your truth,
use silence sparingly, instead use your voice.

Always treat others with respect and love,
and you'll find you'll get that treatment right back,
never make fun of or judge others,
there's always more grey than white or black.

People are just like trees in the breeze,
you can only see what's above the ground,
and that's normally about half the story,
(or at least, that's what we've usually found).

Remember that everyone is a child of God,
we're all equal under the heavens above,
we all have the chance at righteousness,
we can all share in God's wondrous love.

And there are many other pearls we could have shared,
there are many other things that we could teach,
but part of the fun is finding them along the way,
and they are there to find, walking on God's beach.

Your parents have laid a strong foundation,
their love and guidance is something you can build upon,
you are truly loved by all of your family,
and your love for them has always brightly shone.

You've already discovered the beauty in a sunset,
well, we've never really told you how beautiful you are,
but when we look up at the night time sky,
reflected in that magnificence, we see a shining star.

And that shining star is you, Samantha,
God's love shines out of you every single day,
we just wanted to say "Happy Graduation, we love you"
now, we do have just one last thing to say:

Every day, ask for Jesus to sit in your heart,
and ask him to be a tenant in your soul,
and then decisions will become a lot easier,
because the answer will be inside you, completely whole.

Give to others freely, give to them unconditionally,
and let your beauty shine from the inside out,
because only then, do the pearls become plentiful,
only then, do you find what life is really about.

"Hi Allen,

I am wiping away my tears so I can write back to you.  It's beautiful and only one small change.  Could you change the I look up at the night sky to We look up at the night sky, it's from her Grandfather and I.

The verse I will use is

Remember that everyone is a child of God,

we're all equal under the heavens above,

we all have the chance at righteousness,

we can all share in God's wondrous love.

Our message to Samantha would be We believe in Angels, we believe in You!  May God's blessings be always with you.   We love you so much. Grampa Bob and Grammy Judy"
