(This is a truly remarkable story. Kerstin survived a plane crash in 1999 with a broken back. Miraculously, she went on to give birth to Nicholas in 2003. Kerstin wanted something special for Nicholas's first birthday. Kerstin now lives in Cape Town, South Africa, hence the reference to Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles, two very impressive local landmarks. Miracle On Earth

What is your name : Kerstin Pabst

Who do you want the poem written for: for my son Nicholas

Why do you want the poem written: His first birthday is on the 13th of September 2004.

What are the key messages you would like to send: that Nicholas is so much loved; which ever way he choose for his life, we will always be there for him no matter what; that he will have a close relationship to his older brother (22 years form his first marriage) Andreas; his grandparents love him to bits

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: My husband and I are together since 10 years. We had an accident in March 1999 and survived the plane crash in South Africa. My husband was little injured while I broke my back and since than I'm in a wheelchair. I can walk a little bit with help of crutches and calipers. After spending 3 years of rehabilitation we got married in July 2002 and a year later my dream came through. I gave birth to my son Nicholas.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts: I never thought I will fall pregnant. It wasn't a easy pregnancy but to know in the end I can hold my Baby in my arms gave me the strings to go through it. With the support from my husband and family it had to be a happy ending, especially after all the difficult times we had to go through. Now to see our wonderful son makes me cry and to the same time very proud.

Do you have any last comments or thoughts: Sometimes my heart feels sorry, that I will not be able to play sports or to run etc. with him. But I do hope that I can give him other things and that he never feels ashamed of his mommy.

Miracle On Earth

Hello, my wonderful Nicholas,

these words are just for you,

because we're proud of who you are,

and we're very proud of what you do.

We know you're still a little young,

and you haven't quite learned your ABC,

but we just wanted you to know you're beautiful,

you've made our worlds a great place to be.

Your grandparents simply love you to bits,

and there, there's a lot of wisdom for you to behold,

and we're all so looking forward to your future,

and to your stories, as yet unwritten and untold.

We want you to know that you're so very loved,

and yes, you're our own miracle on this Earth,

and we both know the value of your love,

we know exactly what one life is really worth.

You see, when that plane was on it's way down,

I thought my life had ended there and then,

the who's, the what's and why's had been decided,

it was just a matter of waiting for the when.

But we nearly walked away from that plane crash,

and I would have done so, apart from a broken back,

and so now, I'm mostly confined to a wheelchair,

but has my resolve been weakened? Not a crack.

Because out of those ashes a phoenix arose,

and you have helped me to get back on my feet,

you gave me the purpose to get well again,

and never has a victory tasted so very sweet.

Because I never thought I'd fall with you,

and let me tell you this, you weren't an easy time,

but you gave me the strength to go through it,

after that, Table Mountain I could easily climb.

The support of your Dad was simply tremendous,

and I would never have managed it on my own,

the family all pulled together and supported me,

I'm very grateful for all the love that was shown.

And you too will feel the warmth from that love,

and it will build you up as you grow and grow,

and I know you'll be close to Andreas,

oh yes, there's one other that you should know:

We will always be there for you,

no matter what happens, no matter what,

because we know the true meaning of life,

and with you, we know exactly what we've got.

And sometimes my heart gets to feel heavy,

I feel sorry that I won't be able to help you with your sports,

but I promise, I'll make it up to you in other areas,

now I want to leave with you just with a couple of thoughts:

I hope you never feel ashamed of your mommy,

I know I'm different, but so is everyone else, in their own way,

and please, never judge a book by it's cover,

I've heard that's what very wise men have to say.

Because you've got to look what's inside,

that's the important bit, it's what's within,

and if you only look on the surface,

well, your journey will never really get to begin.

But I know you're going to be greater than that,

because I feel like you're just one of the Gods,

you have the Universe at your fingertips,

and you're arrived here, against all the odds.

May the Twelve Apostles look over you,

and may they guide you and keep you safe from fear,

and may you live your full and true potential,

Nicholas, you've already had a miraculous year.

We just wanted to say: "Happy 1st Birthday",

I guess that's really what these words are for,

here's to you, Nicholas, our miracle on earth, you're wonderful,

and here's to our everlasting love for evermore.

Thank you so much for your first draft. Sorry that I came back to you just today but I was in Zimbabwe until yesterday. When I read your poem tears were running down. I was really touched and I like it very much. You absolutely found the right words to express my thoughts and feelings. You don’t need to do any changes. I love it as it is. Once again thank you.
