20th Wedding Anniversary Gift For Wife

One of the great things about A Gift of Poetry is that you can, if you want to, edit my drafts and make your gift truly your own. Of course, this is purely optional and most people just tell me what bits they like and dislike and then I send them the next draft (and so on until they are completely satisfied). However, sometimes the process brings out the ‘inner poet’ and in these cases, I am more than happy to help in that creative process. Enough of the rambling, let’s show you a real live example of what I am talking about….Albert was looking for something special for his wife Teresa on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary. What better than A Gift of Poetry? I’ll let Albert take it from here:

What is your name : Albert Viti

Who do you want the poem written for: Teresa Viti

Why do you want the poem written: On December 10, 2008,   Teresa Viti and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary.

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): Romantic/Happy  -   Sad/Happy during the Breast Cancer portion

Please choose which package you would prefer : Unique

Would you like a copy of the handwritten drafts : Yes

What are the key messages you would like to send:

Some of my key messages will be:
    1. Express how much I am in love with Teresa.  After 20 years, it’s like we are still dating.

    2. Teresa is not only my wife or mother of our son A.J. but she is and will always be my BEST FRIEND.

    3. Teresa only does things for others, never for herself..

    4. Teresa is well liked, loved by everyone she’s in contact with.  Very easy going and will listen to anyone.

    5. Teresa survived Breast Cancer 2 times, went through a Lumpectomy originally in 1998 and after a reoccurance of Breast Cancer (Stage IIIB) in 2002, she also had a bilateral mystectomy.  Key messages for this event is that I am so proud of her for going through all she did to win her fight with Breast Cancer.  It was so hard to see her suffer during Chemo Therapy & Radiation, but never let it take control of her. Teresa was always upbeat and didn’t let her emotions show, especially when around our son A.J.

    6. Teresa is a wonderful mother.  If I could vote, she is the best a child could ask for.  By time I get home from work, Teresa already has done homework with A.J., walked our beagle Buddy and has dinner waiting on the table. Teresa also “tries” to play Playstation 3 and will attempt to shoot basketballs with A.J., after homework is done.

Teresa is a dedicated employee at Easter Seals.  She is the Coordinator of the Reflections Program. There she helps and counsels women going through Breast Cancer. Woulndn’t you figure, not only has she gone through Breast Cancer, but her job role at Easter Seals went from being a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant, to the Reflections Coordinator helping women going through Breast Cancer.  This job makes her so happy and rewarding.  She is the perfect person for this job and the patients love her…
Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: My parents owned the Mohawk Bake Shop and luckily one day, Teresa’s cousin, Joe Cool, saw a help wanted sign at our bakery and told Teresa.  Teresa applied and was the hired. Teresa was from Herkimer, NY, a senior at the time (Class of 1984).  I was from Mohawk, NY (Accross the Eric Canal), a junior at the time. I graduated in 1985.  That’s how we met, thanks to Joe Cool…

It was Christmas time, 1983 and I gave Teresa a Movie Certificate as a Christmas Present, with a note saying something like, Enjoy the movie and I’d like to go with you…   Well that was our first date, we went to see Scareface with Al Pacino.  I know, not the most romantic movie, but it was long and it gave me enough time to get the courage to hold Teresa’s hand for the first time. WOW!!!!  I will never forget that moment.

We dated for 4 years.  Those 4 years, we fell in love and never looked back. Some memorable highlighs of dating that I’d like included:

    a. teaching Teresa how to snow ski and how she ended up in the woods as I said “don’t touch me”.

    b. police passing by while making out in the car in the middle of knowhere in Ilion, the fishing area and at Len Brown Chevrolet dealership.

    c. Teresa driving around in her Honda Prelude with the lights that pop up, she thought she was so cool.

    d. John Couger, our first concert at Saratoga

    e. Dates at the Lake House, Snowmobiling, Pizza Hut and Sangertown Mall

    f. Our Wedding Song – I’ll Always Love You by Taylor Dayne

We got engaged at Disney World in Florida, when we visited my parents.  I did it all wrong, never got down on one knee, did it in front of my parents, it wasn’t really romantic, but it sure did the trick.

We got married on December 10, 1988.  It was a perfect winter day in upstate New York.  A light snow was falling, just as we hoped. Father Steuer married us at Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk, NY. I still remember seeing Teresa walking down the church aisle with her dad, wearing the wedding gown both her Grandma Gert wore as did her mother. Teresa’s face glowed like the winter snow, what a beatiful site.. The reception was at a very romantic place called Beardslee Manor.

Our first home was actually a downstairs apartment at 72 N Fourth Ave in Ilion NY.  We bought the house and together, we made a two apartment house, into a one family HOME.  Everything was perfect until my work relocated us to Dallas, Texas.  That was one of the hardest decisions we had to make, leaving our families in New York.  It ended up being a very good decision. 1807 Castille Dr in Carrollton, Tx is now our home and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

On March 6th, 1995, our son A.J. (short for Albert Junior) was born. I remember that day so clearly.  It was a cold, rainy Texas spring morning when A.J. was born. Teresa and I were blessed with a perfectly healthy baby boy. A.J. has been a perfect baby, little boy and now a young man. We could not imagine life without A.J., for he keeps us young, brings us joy and makes us proud of all his accomplishments. He is a 8th grader (Senior) at Mary Immaculate School and will go to High School next year at Creekview High.

As mentioned in the key messages, in 1998, Teresa went in for a routine exam, when they found the breast cancer. I remember when the doctor gave us the news, “you have breast cancer”.  Our mouths dropped and we started to cry. After the initial shock though, Teresa did everything the doctors asked things are fine once again. More details are in the Key Messages, but being there for Teresa during this time really proved our love for each other and we truly will be together during sickness and in health.

Do you have any other comments or thoughts : I can write more, not sure if this is too long. I gave alot of information, if you need more feelings or expressions, just let me know.  Other key facts:

Teresa is the middle child, older brother Joe, younger brother John

I am the baby of six kids, oldest to youngest:  Donny, Terry, David, Gina, Dean, Me

    +++++

    This was my first draft:

    So Many Ways

The things I love about my Teresa? Well,
I think that would make quite a list,
so, let’s just go through just a few of them,
hopefully, not one, none, will ever get missed:

Well, I love my Teresa very, very much,
and after 20 years, it’s like we’re still dating,
and Teresa, you only ever do things for others,
so, when it comes to you, you’re the lady in waiting.

And I want to express what that lady means to me,
certainly, I will do so before these lines have their end,
because Teresa, you’re not only my wife, AJ’s mother,
you’re my soul mate, my lover, always, my best friend.

You’re well liked, in fact, loved by everyone you meet,
you’re very easy going and will listen to anyone,
truth: your love has been my inspiration, my light,
yes, in every way, you’ve been like my morning sun.

It was hard seeing you suffer during your battle,
but you always kept a determined smile on your face,
you were always upbeat, never letting your emotions show, so,
especially to AJ, things didn’t seem too untoward, out of place.

You see, you’ve always been a wonderful mother,
I think of you both and my chest swells with pride,
and I know that we couldn’t have chosen finer,
    I know we couldn’t – even if we’d tried.

By the time I get home, the homework’s been done,
Buddy’s has had his walk and dinner’s waiting for me,
you also try to play basketball and that Playstation,
but, I’m sorry girl, some things are just not meant to be.

But you’ve gone from being assistant to the coordinator,
yes, destiny has deservedly unfolded for you at Easter Seals,
I know the job makes you so happy, so rewarded, after all,
you can relate exactly to just how every woman really feels.

So I say thank God and Joe for seeing that sign,
Joe Cool by nature and in our case, certainly by name,
and although Scarface wasn’t the most romantic movie ever,
that’s where we started out on our road to fortune and fame.

Thank goodness the movie was a long one, because it gave
me long enough for the courage to build to hold your hand.
WOW!! I will never, ever forget that magical moment, but
I think those are words that you will surely understand.

Because that was the start of our magical 4 year chemistry,
and in those four years, we fell in love and never looked back,
although Ilion, the fishing area and the Len Brown dealership,
well, known for steamy windows and cars, white and black.

But I also taught you how to snow ski, in the woods,
as I said “don’t touch me”, now, I just can’t think why,
but then again, you did drive a very cool Honda Prelude,
with those lights that pop up, cool? Oh dear! Oh my!

But I’ll never forget John Couger at Saratoga nor pizzas,
snowmobiling, Sangertown or those Lake house dates,
but then again, Taylor knew “I’ll Always Love You”,
no surprise really, after all, we were, are, soul-mates.

But I’d like to apologize for my pathetic proposal,
no bended knee, in front of parents, the list goes on,
but, now, 20 odd years later, I’m so glad it did the trick,
because on December 10, your face simply shone.

Your face glowed beautifully, like the winter snow,
you walked up that aisle, in that gown, with your Dad,
and now, when I look back through all our magical times,
I realize, that with you, I’ve shared the best times ever had.

We turned two apartments into a loving family home,
and I know that the Texas move was difficult for a while,
but, as always, Teresa you coped, you adjusted, you
always kept on your face, that beautiful stoic smile.

And now, we wouldn’t trade 1807 for anything,
nor would I trade the day when AJ landed on Earth,
and Teresa, I just wanted to thank you for being you,
yes, I really do appreciate your true and honest worth.

And I know it hasn’t all been plain sailing, but
hey! Who says that life is just a rose filled dream?
But through it all, we’ve stuck and worked together,
yes, we’ve proven to the world, we truly are a team.

And your smile has been the constant throughout,
through the snow, the rain and yes, those sunny days,
and Teresa, I wanted to explain the things I love about you,
but, it’s been too hard, you see, I love you in so many ways.

So, I’ll finish by saying Happy 20th Anniversary,
I guess that’s really what these words are for,
here’s to you, Teresa, you’re truly wonderful,
and here’s to our everlasting love, for evermore.

    Al kindly replied:

Wow,  that was quick and well put.   I will look over this more during the day and come back to you with any changes, if any.   Great start, you have a gift.  You will hear from me later today or tonight.   Appreciate the quick response.

    Al”

Hey Allen,   Sorry for the delay, it’s been a little busy.  Being this is a work in process, I changed some areas to make it yet more personal.  I highlighted in green my changes.  Please feel free to change things around a little to make them more your style, but with the thoughts/ideas I have.  You are slowly making me into a poet???

Please look over the attached and send me back what you think it should look like.  I know some of the stuff I added wasn’t in my original request, but as I read through this, or actually just conversations with Teresa these last few days, trigger thoughts.
Thanks and look forward to hearing back..AL”
    For the record, I replied:

“Hi – It’s lovely and yes, you’ve fallen for my hidden agenda. You are now a poet. I think we can call this a wrap. Thanks again and all the very best, Allen”

and this was the final version, a true collaborative effort:
    So Many Ways

The things I love about my Teresa? Well,
I think that would make quite a list,
so, let’s just go through just a few of them,
hopefully, not one, none, will ever get missed:

Well, I love my Teresa very, very much,
and after 20 years, I only wish it is to be beside her,
with you, I feel just like a teenager in love, and
always remember my dear, I will be your soul provider.

And I want to express what you mean to me,
certainly, I will do so before these lines have their end,
because Teresa, you’re not only my wife, AJ’s mother,
you’re my soul mate, my lover, always, my best friend.

You’re well liked, in fact, loved by everyone you meet,
you’re very easy going and will listen to anyone,
truth: your love has been my inspiration, my light, and
I thank god daily, you are the mother of A.J., our son.

It was hard seeing you suffer during your battle,
but you always kept a determined smile on your face,
you were always upbeat, never letting your emotions show, so,
especially to AJ, things didn’t seem too untoward, too out of place.

You see, you’ve always been a wonderful mother,
I think of you both and my chest swells with pride,
and I know that we couldn’t have chosen finer,
    I know we couldn’t – even if we’d tried.

By the time I get home, the homework’s been done,
Buddy’s has had his walk and dinner’s waiting for me,
These are the simple things that make me love you so much,
you truly deserve time for a Poppy Scone and a cup of Tea.

Thankfully for many, you’re now the Reflections Coordinator,
yes, destiny has deservedly unfolded for you at Easter Seals,
I know the job makes you so happy, so rewarded, after all,
you can relate exactly to just how every woman really feels.

So I say thank God and Joe for seeing that sign,
Joe Cool by nature and in our case, certainly by name,
and although Scarface wasn’t the most romantic movie ever,
that’s where we started our friendship and love, just the same.

Thank goodness the movie was a long one, because it gave
me long enough for the courage to build to hold your hand.
WOW!! I will never, ever forget that magical moment, and
“co-workers” we were no longer, but lovers, as I had planned.

Because that was the start of our magical 4 year chemistry,
and in those four years, we fell in love and never looked back,
although Ilion Gorge, the fishing area and the Len Brown dealership,
well, known for steamy windows and cars, white and black.

But I also taught you how to snow ski, in the woods,
as I said “don’t touch me”, now, I just can’t think why,

But I’d like to apologize for my dismal Disney proposal,
no bended knee, in front of parents, I know, what can I say,
but, now, 20 odd years later, I’m so glad you said YES,
because on December 10, we truly made it “our” magical day.

Your face sparkled beautifully, like the snow flakes of that day,
you walked up that aisle, in Grandma Gert’s gown, with your Dad,
and now, when I look back through all our magical times,
I realize, that with you, I’ve shared the best times ever had.

I will never forget our magical honeymoon, no,
in St Thomas, we certainly stumbled on the “Mark”,
and over an English muffin, with orange marmalade,
I knew, forever, we would never loose our fire, nor our spark.

We turned two apartments into a loving family home,
and I know that the Texas move was difficult for a while,
you see, we loved our families in New York, but we coped,
and so gradually, we fit in, living the Texan lifestyle.

Because now, we wouldn’t trade 1807 for anything,
nor would I trade the day when AJ landed on Earth,
oh my Teresa, thank you for our blessed precious boy,
now, a teen with creeks in his view, we know his worth.

And I know it hasn’t all been plain sailing, but
hey! Who says that life is just a rose filled dream?
But through it all, we’ve stuck and worked together,
