  80th Birthday Gift For Mother

  

  This is the poem I wrote for my mother’s 80th birthday party. It obviously included a public performance, but I know that Mum still reads it quite regularly (because she tells me so).

  The One

  Do you know? I was thinking the other day,
  at fifty, about the person that I’d become,
  I also thought about life, the ifs and buts,
  how, in that life, you only ever, get, one Mum.

  And Mum, you’re mine, or should I say ours?
  Yes, your three sons are here, in this very room,
  certainly different, certainly individuals, but
  cared and nurtured for, in their mother’s womb.

  You must have been thirty when you had me,
  shouting to trepidatious Dad down the stairs,
  I was the third of the three, destined to be, a
  relative latecomer to the plan, but who cares?

  Because Mum, I, we all wanted to say thank you,
  thanks for giving us life, here on planet Earth,
  and we all just wanted to say "we love you", yes,
  we really do appreciate your true and honest worth.

  Your tidy up gene may have expired long ago,
  and you do worry some about the cost of a call,
  but in life, you’ve always been there for us,
  to cook for us, to pick us up, whenever we fall.

  And we also know that it’s not that easy for you,
  with your legs, it’s getting harder to get around,
  but the world would be a flatter place without you, yes,
  we all need bumps, at least, that’s what I’ve found.

  Because if life and love were both just plain sailing,
  well, I think our worlds would become that flatter place,
  a plain, with no hills or dales, mountains to climb, no, not
  for me, not for us, no, we all need these lines on our face.

  For the price of these crow’s feet is life’s experience,
  and I, for one, have felt, experienced, my mother’s love,
  and if only I believed in God and all that, well,
  I’d be passing on my thanks, to the heavens above.

  But instead, I think I’ll keep those thanks Earthly,
  and to say thanks Mum, for everything you’ve ever done,
  because you may not be perfect, but you’re our mother,
  and in life, as I said before, you only get the one.
